About Us

My name is Kelly Thomson I am a Nakota from Carry the Kettle. I have followed the Sundance way of life for 25 years.

I have had a life full of experience with trauma and recovery. I am totally committed to helping ALL people with the battle against addiction. I’ve come through the foster care system and later survived addictions of drugs and alcohol. I have been in the trenches so have first-hand experience in these traumas. My passion is to share my own life hardships but mostly cultural teaching that are common among all first nations.

Rides the Horse Traditional Camp Inc. is passionate about bringing traditional and spiritual teachings to address the connection to our ceremonial way of life through culture. Our target audience is men and women who are trying to find a different alternative to the western norm of treating addiction and living a drug free lifestyle.

They will learn traditional skills such as preparing hides for drum rings from scratch. Ceremonial practices and teachings through participating in the Inibi Wakan. Traditional food preparation.

Our goal is for all participants to find that common bond amongst others also leave with more concrete foundation of identity for being First Nation Cree/Saulteaux/Sioux. The most important of all teachings is to find the connection between themselves and the Creator.

We have expanded to working with Youth ages 14 to 17 years old and have had four (4) camps in 2025/2026.

Our Mission

Reclamation of Ceremony, Traditions and Cultural practices as a way of life by providing a safe and peaceful atmosphere for healing and recovery by Traditional and Cultural methods including the Seven Sacred Rights with the Spiritual Laws, Star Knowledge, and Ceremony.

Program Outline

Rides the Horse Traditional Camp Inc. will provide a five (5) day camp with ten participants to teach the connection to lands, water, animals, medicines, and ceremonial way of living through cultural and traditional practices. This five-day camp will include Inibi Wakan (Sweat), preparing the hides for drums, gathering of medicines, invited guest speakers and traditional meal preparation. Participants will only be responsible for their own gear; hygienic needs,blankets/pillow, and clothes. blankets/pillow, and clothes.

As Indigenous Nations our protocols are very similar and have general teachings that are covered in the program with the awareness that each tribe possess unique belief systems.

The program aims to teach participants the connection they have with Creator and a traditional way of living.

Men's Groups

Spaces available are by groups of up to 10 participants. Rides The Horse Traditional Camp Inc. provides the accommodations, shower and bathroom facilities along with night security.

Women's Groups

Spaces available are by groups of up to 10 participants. Rides The Horse Traditional Camp Inc. provides the accommodations, shower and bathroom facilities along with night security. All Facilitator's for this group are Women.

Youth Groups

Spaces available are by groups of up to 10 participants with chaperones. Rides The Horse Traditional Camp Inc. provides the accommodations, shower and bathroom facilities along with night security.
